Sorry for failing your expectations, as I only started to read your letter, and thus write this reply now, after I returned to my dorm from a whole day of school.
Maybe you have already forgotten the hustle and bustle in the Hall on the first morning of every semester, with students running down the aisles in a terrible haste, and countless owls flying beneath the ceiling and crashing into each other every now and then. I would not open your letter against such a backdrop, for no one knows if it would be knocked into a cup of milk by a falling bird the next second.
Regarding the dining issue you care so much about, the cooking of house elves in Hogwarts has always been laudable, and my appetite is now as robust as my health. You can rest assured that there is no way I will starve myself. But still, I enjoy your meticulous care and attention to details.
Going back to school did touch me a lot. And I must apologize to you, Tom, for I did not realize how twenty years can leave so cruel a mark until I saw silver-haired and bearded Dumbledore and wrinkled Slughorn despite his accumulation of fat. Your little changed appearance tricked me into thinking that, for you, the past two decades were nothing but a blink, just like it was to me.
I feel sorry, Tom, for what I said before. If my words hurt you, please be tolerant to someone who remained fourteen for too long. She has come to understand now, that everything she experienced was trivial beyond mention in contrast to the vast deluge of space and time. I lived through a mere of less than fifteen years, whereas you have already waited for me in this barren world for twenty years. In that light, there might be more depth to your love towards me than my life itself.
Nevertheless, I shall not thank you for that, since gratitude would equate your love as a gift to me, which it is not, but instead, something I am entitled to, just like the name Fiona Giger.
I think I will go to sleep now, and my kiss goes right here, as an apology to you. This mailed good-night kiss will appear by your table tomorrow morning. So, feel free to take it as a good morning kiss before you start your day.
