    Drop in!

Rain kept falling from the gloomy sky. White and yellow lights shinning shone brightly in the darkness.

In the flickering light, a slender figure shuddered with cold. Drips of water rolled down her long black hair. Her lips were bluish, her cheeks blanched. However, the coat in her hands was starkly clean and dry.

Ha! A well-dressed Miss, hmmm, she may be able to be my third special guest.

“Good evening, Miss. Can I help you?”

“Aww.” her face rapidly turned to me, seeming to be taken aback by my voice.

“Eh… Aww… Yes, thanks! Can you take me to Grand Hotel, Sir?”

Actually, that is what I want.

“Sure. Hop in,” my body leaned forward and almost spoke in urgent tones.

Slam! She sat down and faced me, opening her mouth and shutting, unspeaking.

My eyes looked her up and down, “I think maybe you want a towel?”

“Oh, thank you very much. It’s very kind of you, uh…”

I passed the towel to the side, “Eh?”

      “…nothing, thanks!”

Rustle… With switching on the ignition, I turned my head, looking at her brown eyes, “Take your time. You are so welcome.”

The color raised in her cheeks. She withdrew her gaze after an instant, staring at the window at last, “Well, hmm… I found the color of your taxi is not very common. Oh, that… I mean the green is very cool!”

      Hum, coincidence.

Slowly, my fingers that had gripped the steering wheel with her words relaxed, “Well, my friend chose it. Hem… Is Grand Hotel the one beside the Stave Bridge?”

      “Yep. It is that one.”

      Beep.

“I see. Do you think twenty-eight degrees Celsius is OK? Since you just survived from the rain.”

“Much appreciated, Sir,” her eyes stared at me blankly and dully.

“It is my pleasure to take care of my lovely guest.” I glanced at her face with a faint s-mile. “Do you travel alone?”

Her face broke into a wide grin, “Nope. My friend and I want to travel this country for a long time, so we left America together in the holiday. Our parents are even more excited than us haha…”

      Aha, a lovely student!

“Wow, that’s amazing! Your parents must love you very much.” My eyes glanced over the coat. “Is this beautiful coat a gift from them? I saw you cherishing it very much.”

“Yes, you are very insightful, Sir,” she laughed her good mood, “I got it from my seventeenth birthday party!”

“It must be a big surprise, wasn’t it? As I remembered, it is a luxury.”

      Her lips curved.

The information is quite enough now. I’ve known the message I want.

I didn’t speak anymore. In this dumbness, gradually, her eyelids fell down.

The night was silent. The street lamps gleamed dully through the night’s mist and the ground still s-melled of rain. I drove past this familiar city once again.

The water sloshed around the Stave Bridge and willow branches swept the river’s surface. I reminded her gently, “We’ve already arrived, Miss.”

Her lashed fluttered, eyes dulled and she gazed blankly, didn’t seem to recover.

      “We arrived, Miss,” I repeated.

“Oh, ‘arrived’,” she gave a violent shudder abruptly, seemed fully conscious. “Oh, we arrived! Sorry, sorry, Sir. I fell asleep. Uh, how much should I pay for you?”

“Well, forty five dollars,” a faint s-mile flickered across my lips.

“Aws… sorry for not telling you before, Sir… that my bag was stolen including my phone and purse. Can I go inside to call my friend to pay you the fare?”

Wonderful! This night must be the Christmas Eve! And you, my sweetheart, contributes a great portion to my joyness.

“I’m so sorry to hear about that,” my words were totally opposite to what I thought. “Of course you can, but I have a little impolite demand, hem, I’m a little worried about… haw, that… so, can you leave your coat as the pledge?”

      “…hum, I…”

“…Miss Yeah, I know it is rude. Of course! Of course I believe you are a nice and reliable person…”

“No, no, no… It’s okay, do not say that! Please. Wait for a while, and I will come back soon!”

      “Sure, I will, I promise.”

      Brilliant me! Ha…

The sight of her back finally disappeared on the corner.

      Zoom…

It is the time to go. Hope Old Jones won’t raise the price of disguising too much.

The hotel become s-maller and s-maller in the rearview mirror.

“The coat is much more valuable than the fare, Miss. Sorry for increasing your misfortune…”
