Thank you, host.
Good evening, everyone. The topic I'd like to share today is "Begin with the End in Mind". If you've read The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, I believe you already understand how crucial it is to start with the end in mind.
Let me share a story. When I first started working, I ignited a fanatical passion for learning. At that time, I felt there were so many areas I needed to improve: swimming, dancing, English, business etiquette, makeup, fashion... It seemed like I was filled with curiosity about the world and eager to enhance myself quickly, labeling myself as "motivated" and "inspirational."
Back then, I didn't know why I was learning, but I just felt I had to. My perspective was that knowledge is like food—even though the food eventually becomes waste, its nutrients are absorbed by the body and will always serve a purpose. I was deeply moved by my own efforts at the time, but looking back, learning without a system or plan meant I forgot everything I'd studied.
I will never forget when my leader, Leon—who had worked in a foreign company and had excellent English—saw me studying English. He asked, "Are you learning English to get a certificate?" I replied, "No, it's just a hobby." Then Leon said to me, "That won't work. If you don't set goals and just learn casually, you'll get nowhere. You must set goals and begin with the end in mind."
That was the first time I received such guidance, and it felt like opening a door to a new world. Although my personality dislikes limiting myself, I took Leon's words to heart. I set goals for my English learning: to take the Business English Certificate (BEC) and IELTS. Yes, I eventually took both exams. Even though my scores were just passing, they gave me tremendous encouragement. I realized, "Wow! Starting with the end in mind and effectively testing my learning results is so fulfilling!"
More than seven years later, I still feel deeply grateful to Leon for his guidance. Maintaining the habit of beginning with the end in mind has helped me save a lot of energy and time, allowing me to achieve my goals more efficiently.
After this little story, I want to ask two question : Do you have the awareness to begin with the end in mind? Can good habits help you in work and life? Think about it.
Finally, I'd like to add one thing: "Complete before perfecting." After setting a goal, the most important steps are to overcome fear and laziness. A good beginning is half the battle—start bravely. Once we take action, our goals will be achieved through continuous course correction. I know excellent people often tend to plan comprehensively and act only when they feel secure—and I don't think that's wrong. But sometimes, we need a bit of passion and impulsiveness. We must have confidence in ourselves: as long as we take action and seize opportunities, start with the end in mind, set goals, act, and improve continuously, I believe we can keep getting better!
Thank you, and back to the host.
